Biography

Walter Baumhofer (1904–1987) was a definitive American illustrator who earned the moniker "King of the Pulps" for his high-octane cover art. Born in Brooklyn, he overcame a childhood firearm accident that left him deaf in one ear to pursue fine arts at Pratt Institute.In 1926, he began illustrating for Popular Publications, most notably creating the iconic visual identity of Doc Savage for Street & Smith in 1933. Baumhofer’s mastery of dramatic lighting and narrative suspense defined the pulp era before he successfully transitioned to mainstream "slick" magazines like The Saturday Evening Post and fine art landscapes.
