- Biography
Grant Hargis brought the grit of frontier adventure and the suspense of crime fiction to America’s pulp magazine covers. Born in Brooklyn in 1908, he studied art while earning his living as a bank teller, later working as a draftsman. His first pulp cover sales came in 1940, launching a career interrupted by Army service during World War II. Returning to illustration, he painted for Western Trails, Dime Western, .44 Western, and Dime Detective. By 1953, he had turned to industrial design, but continued painting privately. His work preserves the rugged excitement of an era when adventure began at newsstands.
